Program Applied: Marketing Management

In a highly competitive environment, the ability to create competitive edges over one’s adversaries and to achieve ultimate victory in fierce competitions depends not so much on materials resources as on the mental factors of intelligence and concepts. Those concepts that can lead to new visions and perspectives and those approaches that can effectively solve problems will have the greatest value. The overriding factor which ensures the eventual materialization of new concepts and gives rise to effective approaches is management. As a branch of applied science, the science of management has crucial value not only for developing countries like China which are making uttermost efforts to catch up with the developed countries, but also for the leading multinational giants in the developed countries themselves. For a person like me who has decided to pursue marketing management as my career objective, to sharpen my intellectual caliber, to understand the essence of management and to grasp important skills of management have become my greatest aspiration.

As a Master’s student specializing in marketing and enterprise strategies, I am very proud to report that I have made some encouraging research achievements. Of the two research papers that I wrote concerning strategic development of enterprises—Enterprise Strategic Alliance Based on Resource Complementarity and The Strategic Orientation and Countermeasures for Chinese Enterprises in International Operations in the New Millennium, the former has been published by Economic Tribune in Sept. 2002 and the latter has been accepted for publication by China Economists in Feb. 2003. These two research papers are the fruition of my active involvement in a research project named Study on Chinese Enterprises’ Cooperation-Competition Models in Hyper-Competitive Conditions, which is sponsored by China State Natural Science Foundation (Foundation Project No. 70140132). Another paper entitled Brand Marketing: A Competitive Mode on a Higher Level in Modern Economics has been published by Contemporary Finance & Economics in November this year. Those research achievements can unmistakably indicate my tremendous potential to perform much more ambitious researches in my future degree program and I am determined to develop this potential to the fullest extent.

I completed my four-year systematic studies in Engineering and Management Science as an undergraduate at the School of Economics and Management, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It is precisely this undergraduate education that has reinforced my determination to pursue marketing management as my lifelong career. Although as an undergraduate my understanding of some courses cannot be described as profound (some might even be said to be rather superficial), my learning of those courses nevertheless widened my ken of knowledge and broadened my vision.

In order to further enrich myself, I availed myself of every opportunity of academic exchange both on campus and off campus. I shuttled among Peking University, Central Finance and Economics University, and China Renmin University on my bicycle in order to attend lectures delivered by the country’s leading scholars and entrepreneurs. Those lectures constituted an important supplement to my in-class training because they were immediately connected with the realities of Chinese society. I also benefited importantly from my extracurricular activities. As minister of the Department of Social Practices of the School’s Students Union, I planned and organized the School’s Festival of the Art of Management. I also canvassed Pepsi Company to sponsor our university’s basketball league match. In launching those activities, I improved my organizational and managerial skills. In retrospection, my undergraduate program was most strengthened by my self-conscious attention to various applied subjects—higher mathematics, statistics and probability, linear algebra, operations research, etc. It can be said that my undergraduate education (in which my overall scholastic performance ranked top 4th in my class consisting of 30 students) enabled me to make some basic preparations in theoretical knowledge and in the application of mathematical tools.

From Sept. 1998 to April 2000, my employment with Hisense Group in QingDao City, Shandong Province (one of the largest manufacturers of electrical appliances in China) was a major opportunity to practice what I had learned. The second year I joined the Group, the most fierce price warfare happened to China’s electrical appliances industry. Manufacturers reduced the prices of their products to unprecedented low levels in order to maximize their market share. As an act of market competition, the Marketing Department where I worked launched Traveling Expositions of Hisense Products. As one of the four key personnel of the department, I planned and organized a series of exhibitions in most major cities in China. Our one-year efforts achieved remarkable market effects. In Shijiazhuan City, for instance, of a total of 30 brands, our sales of televisions and air conditioners accounted for 24% and 18% respectively in 2000. In that year’s performance evaluation, I was awarded the Group’s Model Employee.

My understanding of marketing was enriched and modified by my 2-year practical work experience. To me, marketing was not merely composed of such elements as product designing, promotion through advertising, pricing models, and distribution channels. It also encompassed the analysis of the behavior both of your competitors and of consumers, studies in organization behavior, brand management, and decision-makings. Believing that a more systematic education would contribute to a more successful career, I went back to my alma mater in September 2000 and went on with a Master’s program in Engineering and Management Science in order to gain knowledge on a higher professional level, to follow the most updated academic information, and to improve my managerial caliber.

Backed by my work experience, my academic focus became better-defined and I was more self-motivated in my studies. My thesis, entitled A Study of Enterprises’ Strategic Alliances Based on an Analysis of Resource Complementarity, presented a wholly novel explanation of corporate alliances from the perspective of resource integration, a perspective which differed fundamentally from the conventional view held by most scholars which explained the necessity and justification of corporate alliance from the angle of transaction cost and value chain.

Instead of feeling contented with my high GPA for the Master’s program (), I have come to realize how much there is still for me to learn in the field of management, especially in marketing. Most universities in China treat marketing purely as a theoretical course, with neither case analysis nor opportunities for students to practice the theories they have learned. In terms of curriculum, studies in marketing psychology and individual behavior have hardly been undertaken. Moreover, the lack of analytical tools has resulted in insufficient analysis of the market feedback. Realizing that such deficiencies can scarcely be overcome within a short period of time, I believe that a more successful career must be pursued through a . program outside China, ideally in a first-rate university in the United States.

With my undergraduate and graduate background in engineering and management science, I would like to focus on one of the following areas in your . program: a. marketing management; b. behavioral approaches to marketing or consumer behavior; and c. channels of distribution. Personal Statement Applied Program: Wireless Telecommunications On August 27, , at the Central Institute of the Datang Telecom Technology and Industry Group based in Beijing, a young woman, full of energy and self-confidence, was giving a presentation entitled “The Design of the Switching Numerical Method of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) Strategy in TD-SCDMA, and the Testing of Its Simulated Systems,” which received rapt attention and high remarks from all the experts in Computer and Telecommunications who attended the meeting. That woman was I. At present, TD-SCDMA, W-CDMA, and CDMA are considered the main technological standards in the third generation of the world’s technological development in mobile telecommunications. And the design of a switching computation method for the RRM Strategy is a key element and technological crux for the TD-SCDMA technology. In retrospection, I found that it was my great enthusiasm for mobile telecommunications, and my persistent pursuit of accuracy and perfection that have helped me win accolades from colleagues and experts. In China, since the TD-SCDMA uses a smart antenna, it makes a demand for a finer research on the computation method for the RRM Strategy, in areas such as PC, DCA, and HC. To me, a new starter in the company, it was a real challenge. Since the research team was new, it lacked engineering data and practical experience, although the equipment of the lab was quite advanced. It was only after much library research, thinking, and consultation with experts did I find a RRM computation method suitable for a smart antenna. Because a smart antenna has its advantages of a more accurate VE locating and reduced searching areas, this computation method effectively lowers the complexity of the switching process and its failure rate. During the time when I worked for the project, I often stayed up several days in a roll to perfect a lab test. But I also derived an enormous sense of satisfaction and fulfillment after overcoming obstacles, which more than compensated the pains and difficulties that I had to go through.

The rapid development of mobile telecommunication technology places a high demand on professionals working in this field. To a certain extent, it has to be a labor of love. My keen interest in mobile telecommunications emanated from the concept of “personal communication.” During my undergraduate years at the Northwest University of Industry, I spent much of my spare time browsing over professional publications and journals, to keep myself abreast of current developments. The concept of “personal communication” I encountered during this process impressed me immensely. A system of “personal communication” is one that allows the user to communicate at anytime, anyplace, to anyone, and in any way. It painted such a beautiful of picture of a future society that I became fully convinced that it is a subject well worth my lifelong pursuit. This was why I chose Mobile Telecommunications as my area of specialization in the graduate program. As a graduate student, I completed several research projects independently and successfully, including, for instance, “Turbo Code and the Application of Its Coding Concept.” In short frame conditions, the Turbo Code, with its improved application in engineering, seems to have a bright future in real-time voice-data service (Please see the attached article). After completing my graduate degree, I entered Datang Group, a pioneer in China’s software development. Here I did software design for the switch control template used at the RNC equipment for the TD-SCDMA system, and developed a switching computation method for the RRM Strategy. I went through the entire process of software design for the switch control template for the RNC equipment, from topic analysis to the project outline and then to actual program writing. The present development of telecommunication technology indicates that the smart antenna, software radio, and the transmission technology of subline 下行 high-speed subdivided exchange data (下行高速分组交换数据传输技术) are key technologies for today’s mobile telecommunications. Software radio, in particular, has attracted much public attention. The use of DSP and software to solve the problem of wireless interfaces of diverse standards on a public hardware platform has become a major issue pursued by many professionals in our field. I too hope to make my own contribution to the technological development in this area. In the next few years, the traditional concept of using.

chips to build wireless equipment for mobile telecommunication will be seriously challenged. In recent years, the technologies and standards of the third generation of mobile telecommunication have been rapidly updated. Software radio, I believe, will be the future of our trade. My desire to know more about computer engineering prompted me to rise above my present conditions. The United States, as technological superpower, have first-rate teaching faculty and research facilities in the world. Its ideological openness and tolerance make a sharp contrast to Chinese culture, which tends to value tradition rather than innovation. Wireless telecommunication may be said to be one of the newest research areas, and it is new concepts and new vision that give life to the industry. I believe that in the fine research environment in the United States, I will be able to make “shortcuts” in attaining my academic and career goals. I would like to apply for admission to the Center for Wireless Telecommunications of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. As the most prestigious research institute in Wireless Telecommunications, the Center has a large number of famed scholars and professionals dedicated to the theoretic research of Wireless Telecommunications. Meanwhile, it maintains close contact with the telecommunication industry, and in this way can test the theory in practical experimentation, which in turn promotes theoretic research. My interest in science dates back to my early childhood. I have always excelled in physical sciences and have received numerous awards in mathematics in high school. At age 18, I attended Beijing Normal University, majoring in physics. My aspiration to be a research scientist also makes the graduate study an absolute necessity for me. As an undergraduate student, I specialized in physics, mathematics, and computer science. My current duty, as a research assistant, is to set up diamond film growth kinetics experiments which is designed to verify whether the mechanism of H atoms destroying C-H bonds in diamond film growth is the bottleneck reaction to diamond film formation. The results will give valuable insights and better enhance the research efforts of another group here. In the meantime, I am learning about the scanning probe microscopy, charged particle optics, energy analyzers and instruments used in surface science through the seminars held in my group. Just as the physical conditions can be reflected from the circulation of blood according to the Chinese medicine, the economic operation of a country can be judged from its financial status, funds flow, etc. My exposures to the professional courses of Money and Banking, Corporate Financing, Macro/Micro Economics, Econometrics, International Finance, and Insurance as well as the mathematical courses such as Mathematical Analysis, Advanced Algebra, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics have enabled me to lay a solid academic foundation of finance. Meanwhile, bearing in mind sound interpersonal skills and hands-on ability are the basic personal qualities required of a successful financial person, I availed myself of various opportunities to undertake practices. I began to invest in the stock market in 2007. In face of the frustrations at the outset, I audited all the courses of security analysis and investment on campus, read a lot of financial magazines and newspapers and consulted some professors and my parents. I was uplifted during such a process, not only in money making, but also in grasping the principles and regulations behind the stock market. I value my experiences in conducting research programs which acted as bridges linking my theoretical knowledge with the larger world where it would be applied. More importantly, I got much enlightenment and inspiration from making presentations, like my presentations regarding the comparison and analysis of appreciations of Yuan and Yen along with the cases of insurances. In these presentations, I tried to arrive at flexible and comprehensive command of complicated knowledge. 首先是内容和结构

PS就是个人陈述，研究生都要写，大致内容包括学科基础、项目和科研、实习和工作经历、课外活动阅历、研究生和未来的规划，需要集中体现申请者的特点是学术理论的成熟、科研兴趣创新潜力、团队领导沟通能力、充沛的经历和对未来的热情。

既然作为一篇文章，就一定要有完整的结构。常用的写作结构式用横向的内容做框架，把纵向的能力填充进去，用内容体现素质。或者是围绕几个申请人特点用具体的实践内容来补充说明。当然，写作中要有侧重，比如强力突出科研能力弱化课外活动是一般博士申请中合理的布局；对于以求职为目的的硕士申请，实习和工作经历，团队领导沟通能力，这些就会格外重要。

其次是写作过程

1、思考和列提纲 PS作为重要的文书材料，从构思到动笔结束，会经过比较复杂而严谨的过程来完成，因此需要好好思考。

思考包括两个方面，思考自己要写什么和怎样写。前者需要申请人反思自己对所要申请的学校和专业是否有了比较深入和细致的了解，能否做到在写自述时紧扣学校和专业的要求和特点突出自己的申请优势？自己的人生有什么独特的地方？在该领域有了哪些研究项目，成就如何？上学期间从事了哪些助研或实践工作？通过这些活动在什么方面得到了什么提高？最终的事业目标是什么？等等。后者包括如何组织素材，如何突出闪光点。因此，在一开始整理素材的时候最好是养成随时做笔记的习惯，把突现的灵感和闪光点随时记录下来列成提纲，整理出写作思路。

整理好了之后就写下来，打个草稿。

对于结论，需要把各种主题归集在一起，再强调一遍，并重申同学们对申请目标的兴趣，以及为什么有兴趣。
